Teaching Project Summary

NURS 402: Role of Development for Baccalaureate Nurse as Educator

Purpose of the Assignment

          The purpose of the assignment is to provide the student the opportunity to summarize in detail the development, implementation, and evaluation of an instructional intervention for a specific patient or professional group.

Approach to the Assignment

            My approach to this assignment was to use a teaching subject that has personally impacted myself. I have gone through two previous C-sections, both of which were emergent. Everything was done so quickly there was little education conveyed. I made sure to research and educate on the process of a Cesarean section and the recovery period after. Since Covid was still prevalent during my time in this class I chose to utilize zoom for the education session. Within this summary I outlined the subject, the audience, my assessment strategy, the teaching plan, the focus and content, implementation, evaluation, and ended with reflection on the project. This assignment was rewarding and will aid me in my journey as a labor and delivery nurse.

Reason for Inclusion

            The reason why I chose to include this project is because of the role that I took on as an educator. There was much planning that went into this project and the summary was no different. Evidence of leadership and an understanding of learning styles showcase my ability to provide adequate education. 

Communication

  • Expresses oneself and communicates effectively with diverse groups using a variety of media

Throughout the summary I outline various media that was utilized within my education session. There was a diverse group of attendees present ranging in different ages and genders. I expressed myself and communicated the subject effectively through several different outlets including a screenshared website outlining the steps of a cesarean, a pictorial chart, a handout, and a posttest through a website called iquiziz.

  • Demonstrates skills in using technology, informatics and communication devices that support safe nursing practice 

While conducting this education session I demonstrated skills in using technology through screensharing and utilizing an online platform. With regards to informatics and communication devices I was able to share graphs of patient outcomes showing the increased percentages of C-sections over the years. 

  •   Accesses and utilizes data and information from a wide range of sources to enhance patient and professional communication 

I was able to access and utilize data and information from a wide range of sources which in turn enhanced my patient and professional communication. I utilized the Old Dominion University Library and was able to find pertinent information to my teaching project. I also utilized the American Nurses Association to set Standard 12 Education as my specialty specific standard. It states, “The registered nurse seeks knowledge and competence that reflects current nursing practice and promotes futuristic thinking” (ANA, 2015, p.5). Making sure that you are up to date on current practices while in obstetrics is vital and enhancing your communication and knowledge will aid in the effective care and safety that each patient will receive. This was evident while conveying the information that I learned through this research. My communication was professional and the “patients” understood the lesson that was taught. 

Teaching

  • Provides teaching to patients and/or professionals about health care procedures and technologies in preparation for and following nursing or medical interventions

I provided teaching to a group about Cesarean sections. This involved the procedure in full including preparation and post-op. From start to finish it was outlined what was done, why it had to be done, and the different ways to perform a Cesarean. This will involve technologies such as inputting a patient’s baseline vitals.

  • Provides relevant and sensitive health education information and counseling to patients, and families 

Relevant and sensitive health education information was provided on Cesarean sections and counseling was conveyed on how to effectively decrease C-section rates and advocate for the birth plan that you want. Of course, it was also mentioned that some situations become emergent and therefore require an emergency Cesarean to ensure the health of both mother and child.

  • Evaluates the efficacy of health promotion and education modalities 

I evaluated the efficacy of health promotion and education modalities by creating and reviewing a posttest. This evaluated the efficiency of the teaching lesson and also addressed the learning modalities of the group. A handout was completed before the session to address how each participant learns the best. This posttest utilized visual and reading modalities. 

  • Uses informatics to enhance one’s own knowledge base to support teaching

Previous to this teaching session I had baseline knowledge of Cesarean sections due to previous births of my own. I used informatics to enhance my knowledge and to support my teaching on how to decrease C-sections and the process that is involved before, during, and after this procedure. This was done through researching evidence-based practice, journals, and data concerning the increasing rates of C-sections and how to decrease them.
