Research Process Group Paper
NURS 363: Nursing Research
Purpose of the Assignment
The desired outcome of this activity is to increase the student's ability to critically analyze the steps in the research process. The learner will refine skills of group process during the development of this assignment.
Approach to the Assignment
The approach to this assignment was to research and examine exercise and other modifiable factors to prevent postpartum depression. This was done through the utilization of a PICO question. Broken down by each letter it stands for Population/problem, intervention, comparison, and outcome. This enabled us to conduct in-depth research on preemptive approaches to prevent the probability of postpartum depression.
Reason for Inclusion
The reason why I included this project in my portfolio is due to the research and teamwork that is portrayed. I also believe that the information is relevant and a true intervention to prevent the probability of postpartum depression. Being able to break down a question using the PICO method was effective and resulted in pertinent information that was easy to gather as a group.
Research
Differentiates between descriptive nursing literature and published reports of nursing research
Descriptive nursing literature gave us the foundation to explain postpartum depression and how it affects a woman’s postpartum body. The published reports of nursing research allowed us to distinguish interventions that gave outcomes of patients who participated in the research to use exercise and other modifiable factors as ways to prevent postpartum depression.
Applies research-based knowledge from the arts, humanities and sciences to complement nursing practice
Research-based knowledge from the arts, humanities, and sciences were all applied to complement nursing practice within this project. The arts were referred to in this paper with yoga as intervention for preventing postpartum depression. Yoga was referred to “as an art form in which the mind, body and soul are all connected and act as one. While people practice yoga for different reasons, the effect it has on everyone’s mind, body and soul is the same” (SkinnyMs., 2019). This was further backed by an analysis Aguilar-Cordero (2019), whose analysis observed interventions that involved aerobic exercise, yoga, and walking, resulted in the release of the feel-good hormones such as serotonin, dopamine, and B-endorphins. The humanities were researched through the implementation of social support. Receiving social support from family and medical providers along with adequate maternal sleep are documented strategies in PPD prevention (Mughal et al., 2020). As for the sciences the implementation of cognitive-behavioral therapy was considered to reduce symptoms of depression. In a study that was conducted by Liu and Yang (2021) cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) was found to significantly reduce the chances of developing postpartum depression in first-time mothers at risk for PPD.
Shares research findings with colleagues
Within this group project we were constantly sharing our research findings with each other for each category breakdown and how it backed up the information provided. This enabled us to converse and decide as a group which research findings were the most relevant to our topic and study.
Professionalism
Differentiates between general, institutional, and specialty-specific standards of practice to guide nursing care
A differentiation between general, institutional, and specialty-specific standards of practice to guide nursing care were made in screening mothers for postpartum depression. Generally, a screening is performed during the post-natal period at the six-week checkup. Institutionally, screening for postpartum depression occurs during pregnancy and then at the six-week checkup and specialty specific standards at the obstetrics floor I have rotated through offered a hotline for mothers that were experiencing effects of postpartum depression who needed help immediately.
